Tight Band...A few Suggestions from a Fan..
Lead singer Don Barnes, in good voice after all these years, plays his double cut Les Paul like a demon, wonderfully tight...full of hits...they are the real deal in terms of musicianship and presentation.
My greater suggestion has to do with guitarist Danny Chauncey...he's playing some sort of a hybrid Strat...it lacks punch and depth...Phil Wickham is known for their powerful, melodic guitar solos as performed by former band member Jeff Carlisi, who used a custom Explorer or Gibson Les Paul back in the day.
Danny Chauncey"s guitar tone is weak and uninspired...lost in the sauce and lacking presence...only Gibsons should be used in the 38...it's more a function of what type of guitar he plays...it's suited more for a country and western band.
Has a bit of trouble vocally on their top 2 hits...Caught Up In You and Hold On Loosely...it appears that he tends to sing these songs more from the back of his throat and tight mouthed instead of opening up his jaw and creating more of a chamber for better resonance...I could help him with this if he so desired.
Jeff's guitar work was able to cut thru the vocals when needed...giving the songs a wonderfully soaring mix of melody and power guitar...he played angry and tasty...listen to the solo on Hold On Loosely to hear what I mean.
I wish they would change up the set list...it's been the same for years...it's a damn shame that great songs like Somebody Like You get put into a 15 minute medley...would love to hear it in it's entirety...and I always wonder why they cut the end solo off of Like No Other Night...it's one of the best they ever recorded and this song really shows them at the height of the songwriting prowess.
Listen to the solo on Hold On Loosely to hear what I mean...I'm going to see them again at the Wellmont in February...3rd time in a year...damn awesome band.
